STEPHEN, George Arthur (1880-1934)
Bishopsgate Institute 1894; St Pancras 1906; CL Norwich 1911-1934
Aided by a genius for work akin to Panizzi's, he developed in NORWICH a modern service from unpromising beginnings. He was an expert on bookbinding and published Commercial bookbinding (1910), and, with H T Coutts, Manual of library bookbinding (1911). He was active on the LA Council, his work in particular, from 1926 until his death, as Honorary Secretary of the Subject Index Committee, linking the early and very checkered period of Wyndham Hulme's editorship with that of Rowland Powel's.
